I'm trying to get Final Fantasy IV as my own *self Christmas present*, so should I obtain it, what should I expect?

It's one of the only Final Fantasies I've never, ever played before. The only reason I'm getting it is because it'll be new to me. That, and it's Final Fantasy. :3

That being said, how is it? I'd like to know what I'm in for. xD;

FFIV or IX? I'm confused, because you put this in the FFIX forum.

FFIV is pretty great, in my opinion. The story is nothing you haven't seen before if you've played most of the games after it, although you can see where all the general story ideas and character archetypes in the series come from.

The difficulty seems to be a turn off for many people, although, like every other boss in the series, there's always a trick to beating a certain boss. There isn't any way to gain new skills and such other than leveling up in this game, which leads people to believe that mass leveling is required, when in fact simple strategies can get you pretty far. Each character comes with a set class, and if they learn magic, they receive new spells at certain levels. Characters enter and exit the party (a la FFII) with different story events, and depending on the version you're playing, you may be able to switch out party members near the end of the game.

I'd definitely give it a try. It's not as long as today's Final Fantasies, but it's still pretty long on a first playthrough. Also watch out for the Nintendo DS remake which should come out in English sometime next year.

Got my roman numerals mixed up, hah.

I could always emulate it, but that's never fun. ;_;

Thanks for the insight. =D

It has a good story to it mate, I wont go into it too much so I dont spoil it for you but the story revolves around a dark knight who commits a terrible act at the start of the game and who is destined to be the saviour of the world. Cue the usual final fantasy stuff you've come to know and love from the whole series :)

I would just wait for the DS version. It's pretty much exactly the same as the original, except with much, much more challenging bosses and an ability system that allows you to customize your characters (a feature that was sorely lacking in the original).

Of course, I probably should have mentioned this before Christmas. The original is good as well, probably one of the better FF games. It has the most consistently entertaining set of boss battles in the series, with the possible exception of FFVI. It's also one of the most important games in the genre, in terms of storytelling.

It's about a Dark Knight that after realizing that he has harmed many peoples, he chooses to become a Paladin to protect people.
