Just post here if you find more, because a lot of people have found some so far.

Beatrix being blind has been mentioned already.
Then there's obvious stuff like doves representing freedom.
As much as I love FFIX it's more of a spoonfed story. There's not much to dig at. If you want symbolism, look at FFVII. It's full of it.

Also, play the game I'm making ^^. Also full of symbolism (I'm warning you, it's hard to get unless you think)

although it isnt really symbolism, ff9 is full to the brim with past ff references. (i talked about the pluto knights) like, when youre on the tantalus ship, on the wall is the buster sword, and zidane says,"i used to know a guy with spiky hair who had a sword like this" or something.

also, in treno's auction house, if you but dorgas artifact and unne's mirror, and go play the black mage villages record player, you can hear a tune from ff3.(dorga and unne are characters in ff3.)

and there are countless others...of course, this game doesnt have as much sybolism as 7 and 8, per se, but has alot of ff references.

...and....sourdough bread is good.

i was just messing around ^^;; (but i really do love sourdough bread...)

isnt her site called "the crystal" or something? i think its an ff9 site...

does it really seem like that? i go on every day...huh... although, most of the posts i check on are just the games, and not a real discussion, so i move on to the next site on my priority list...

It's just that it's only the same people coming on, and not very many. Should this thread be moved?

Zeromus_X
10-29-2005, 12:18 PM
i dont think it should be moved. ( its in the ff9 forum, isnt it ? :))

and, ive found another thing to tell everyone.

in the play at the end of the game, one of zidane's lines is "no cloud nor squall will ever separate us" or something like that.

cloud and squall are the main characters of the other two ps1 ffs, ff7 and 8.

so maybe square is saying that they think ff9 is better than those two? ;) i dont know about that, but i found that very interesting.

Cool. Also, it's really odd how Gaia and Terra are different worlds, as they both mean "earth." Also, Daguerro was founded by an inventor, and there was a person called Louis Jacques Mandé Daguerre who was a French inventor. Alexandria was near a shore in the game, as is in real life. Treno, a place with lots of money, is similar to "Reno," don't you think? I also think that the place name "Conde Petie" refers to the smallness of the people there, who are dwarves. After all they are "petite," hence the "petie" part. Vivi is the prefix for life, and it is odd that he is the one who quotes "How do you prove that we exist? Maybe we don’t exist…" which is to mean that he is doubting whether we live or not, and if there was a purpose to our "life." Anyways, that's enough for now. More research...

square must really think these out when they make the ff games...well the 10- ones anyway...

also, freya was a goddess in some old mythology...ill try and find which one...but she was an anachronism card!

ok, freya was a war and love goddess(in norse mythology), so basically aphrodite with a temper  but her chariot was driven by a pair of giant kitties!!=3 :D :p

eh...go to wikipedia and look up "freya"? i dont know the exact address...

FFIX wasn't really supposed to be a numbered FF... (It was going to be a shrine-like game, that's why there are so many past FF references)

most of the character names have meanings. Same in most FFs

Shall we call this names symbolism too? I think word symbolism had a different meaning...
Anyway, I agree with all what you said in the thread. (By the way, 'Terra' is the name for earth in my regional speech :p)

Also, Freya was the Norse goddess of love. Odd...but then again, she had this love thing going on with Fratley. "To be forgotten is worse than death" -Freya

What does Zidane mean?

ShadowHeart
11-18-2005, 07:56 AM
Zidane is the surname of a French soccer player, and not just any soccer player, he was elected the best player in the world a couple of years ago. That's all I know about that name :)

Totorosama

Odd...must mean either more than that, or none at all.

Who is a Quan ( blue magic) or something sorry i forget name?

Avathar
12-14-2005, 12:21 PM
Quan (Quale's Master and Vivi's Grandfather) used to live in a cave with Vivi. The cave's got a couple of benefits: healing source, chocobotreasure, twice a stellazio, and a secret sequence involving Quina and Vivi.

I have a quick question. If Vivi is a black mage then why does his grandpa look like Quina           ?

plain and simple, FF9 was the last of the traditional FF rpgs, and therefore it was made as a tribute to its predecessors; that is the reason for all of the references to the older FF games. Not to mention it is my favorite FF (after 7). If you have played the all of the FFs you will also notice A LOT of recycled music throughout the whole game.

correct quote.....wrong location. he actually sees it in the shop in lindblum (weapon shop check it out :D) they have "good" weapons............cough cough STEINER cough cough...........

some sybological things like the obvious thing of memories (hello a place called MEMORIA!!) also theres things about terra and stuff (linking to creation of humans :D) another thing i saw was the bit with the whole edilon wall thing........cave paintings. maybe.........EDILONS EXIST?!?!?!?!?!...........yer i no......

one thing i did notice though was the link from ff9 to ff5 (the lifa tree!!!) ff5 the source of all bad things is tht tree (Ex-death with extra grow) and then the lifa tree the source of mist (which creates black mages and binds terra to gaia :D another evil thing :D) lots of evil. the kuja taking everyone with him thing makes sense.................fear of death after all is natural....

I might as well post a list of some references:
*Some spoilers*

1. The name "Garland" is a reference to FF1's Garland.
2. The buster sword quote. Although, I can't seem to see the Buster sword on the wall.
3. "Kains lance" is a reference to FFIV's Kain.
4. The 4 chaos guardians are references to FFI's guardians.
5. The Namingway card is a reference to FFIV's "Namingway" who also renames your characters.
6. The dwarves greeting "Rally-ho" is a mis-translation of FFIV's "Lali-ho"
7. Kuja's "Flare-star" attack is also used by Atma in FFVI.
8. FFIX's best weapon "Ultima-Weapon" is a mis-translation of "Atma-weapon". Zidanes best weapon was orginally meant to be named "Atma-weapon" (There was also a awesome weapon in FFVI called Atma-weapon.)
9. Cid's last name "Fabool" is a reference to a town called "Fabul" in FFIV.
10. Moogles are a reference to the first game they were in, FFIII.
11. The biggest reference of them all, Terra, she was a main character in FFVI.

There are tons more (over 100 in all) but I can't post them all. ;)

Haha, I've discovered a new one, I thought I've known all the obvious ones, but:

When In Black Mage Village, there's a baby Chocobo called Bobby Corwen.

Zidane: "Why do they keep calling it by it's full name?"

BOBBY CORWEN (FFIX) - BOCO (FFV)

^^

Zeromus_X

Oh wow! I've never noticed that before! Good find, Avathar. Boco (or Boko) is also the name of Wiegraf's Chocobo in Final Fantasy Tactics, and it is a common Chocobo name in the series. :)

Avathar

^^ Teehee, it's not farfetch'd at all. And knowing FFIX being a tribute to the classics and all, it's mostly to be a reference at first to Final Fantasy V ;D (although, wasn't there also a chocobo in FFVIII called Boko, or am I mistaken?).

Yggdrasill
09-03-2006, 11:36 AM
Yeah, Boco is from FFV.
I don't think there's a chocobo in FFVII called Boco, I could be mistaken though.

.

You're wrong it's in the weapon shop in Linblum when Zidane says that and another reference is Eiko's background like Rydia from IV Eiko's village of summoners were destroyed and she became the last existence from her village other than Garnet and also Rydia and eiko are both children well until Rydia was sent to the land of summoning.
