Agreed, today sucks. But in fact, every day has sucked the last 2 weeks, and will continue to suck for a long time. Life sucks. It's strange how one girl can affect your life so much.

Valentine's day is despicable. For the first thing, it has nothing to do with Vincent Valentine, which is a real blow to any FF gamer. But in reality, I honestly believe that the least romantic thing possible is a day where you are forced to be romantic. I had to stop myself from hurling about five times in school today because of the sappiness. Dear lord, it was like watching Titanic again, but nobody died, which would ultimately make others sad and give me schadenfreude*. So it was like watching a sappy love movie without the deadly retribution in the end. I wish that idiot Cupid would just impale himself on one of his arrows. Stupid holiday...
*Schadenfreude is a term used for the happy feeling that you get at someone else's misfortune. It's a german word stolen by english speakers.

You know Valentines day was created by Abe Lincoln, so that card stores back then could make more money with this holiday. :p

In Sweden, Valentine's day isn't called Valentine's day.. it's called "All hearts' day" if you translate directly.

That's why they made the movie Valentine. Lots of people died in that movie.

i've got a girlfriend for a very long time now... and we both don't "believe" in Valentine's Day. It's just another fabrication-celebration day, manufactured by corporates like Hallmark.

Valentines day is a made-up holiday, but just like every holiday it's made up...God didn't say "Let there be Christmas." But he did give us His Son. So you can choose what you will and won't celebrate - it's that simple.

It's not a made up holiday, but another example of the early Christian church wiping out an old pagan festival by substituting their own elements into it.
The History of Saint Valentine's Day
Valentine's Day started in the time of the Roman Empire. In ancient Rome, February 14th was a holiday to honour Juno. Juno was the Queen of the Roman Gods and Goddesses. The Romans also knew her as the Goddess of women and marriage. The following day, February 15th, began the Feast of Lupercalia.
The lives of young boys and girls were strictly separate. However, one of the customs of the young people was name drawing. On the eve of the festival of Lupercalia the names of Roman girls were written on slips of paper and placed into jars. Each young man would draw a girl's name from the jar and would then be partners for the duration of the festival with the girl whom he chose. Sometimes the pairing of the children lasted an entire year, and often, they would fall in love and would later marry.
Under the rule of Emperor Claudius II Rome was involved in many bloody and unpopular campaigns. Claudius the Cruel was having a difficult time getting soldiers to join his military leagues. He believed that the reason was that roman men did not want to leave their loves or families. As a result, Claudius cancelled all marriages and engagements in Rome. The good Saint Valentine was a priest at Rome in the days of Claudius II. He and Saint Marius aided the Christian martyrs and secretly married couples, and for this kind deed Saint Valentine was apprehended and dragged before the Prefect of Rome, who condemned him to be beaten to death with clubs and to have his head cut off. He suffered martyrdom on the 14th day of February, about the year 270. At that time it was the custom in Rome, a very ancient custom, indeed, to celebrate in the month of February the Lupercalia, feasts in honour of a heathen god. On these occasions, amidst a variety of pagan ceremonies, the names of young women were placed in a box, from which they were drawn by the men as chance directed.
The pastors of the early Christian Church in Rome endeavoured to do away with the pagan element in these feasts by substituting the names of saints for those of maidens. And as the Lupercalia began about the middle of February, the pastors appear to have chosen Saint Valentine's Day for the celebration of this new feaSt. So it seems that the custom of young men choosing maidens for valentines, or saints as patrons for the coming year, arose in this way.

Having said that, it has been taken over by commercial concerns and is now just a day to make money. Not too long ago, it was the custom to only give cards that the person made themselves and no gifts, but we have now been pushed into buying stuff instead and any meaning the day used to have is long gone.
Personally, I don't like Valentines day as I think romance is a load of twaddle and the growing commercialisation of this day is disgusting.
Just for the record, Christmas is another example of the early church wiping out a pagan festival by substituting one of its own. There is no evidence Jesus was born in December (in fact apart from the bible, there is no real evidence Jesus ever existed). Most of those who have studied this subject agree that March is the most probable time Jesus was born. Dec 25 is however the date of the very important pagan festival of the Saturnalia which the early church was desperate to get rid of. It only had limited sucess however as most of the traditions we associate with christmas have pagan origins.

Wrong. His execution was recorded and his existence was witnessed and news was spread by many people.
The question is not over whether he exists but rather over whether he is actually the messiah. You could take the Christian point of view which is fairly obvious, or the Islamic and Jewish point of view (which says he was an important prophet but not the messiah), or you could take the view of a religon (besides hinduism- some branches of which recognize Jesus) that does not believe in God/Allah/Yaweh at all. Or the agnostic or atheist point of view.

The data and documents belonging to that far past are not reliable. And I do wonder if Jesuschrist was only a man too. A natural leader I would say. But, coming back to thread, I must say Valantine's Day is just another day for me. It can even be annoying when we have not a 'special' person with us, but I actually do not hate this date. Perhaps, Christmas annoys me a bit more,as I get sick and tired of listening Christmas songs everywhere(supermarkets,streets..), usually sung by children... personally, I find this choirs spooky!

What's wrong with celebrating love? Anyways, you don' t need a card or anything. Just remember to be a better person: Nice, warm, cuddly, fuzzy...Just kidding.

that's what i've been thinking the whole time when i read this thread: you don't need one day to celebrate your love.... if you've find love, you should celebrate it randomly, when you're in love(constantly :o )

I was going by the lack of definent evidence that Jesus existed as in the bible. Some scholars have put forward the idea that its far more likely that the Jesus in the bible is not one man but the combined stories of several "prophets" that existed and were preaching in the area around that time. Crucifixition was a populour Roman punishnment as well so its highly probable that several, if not more, jewish religious leaders and malcontents met the same fate. The early authors of the new testement put all this together into the story of the one man portrayed in the bible.
I don't know which is true and if the Jesus of the bible existed or not, but as an atheist don't believe all the son of God stuff and miracles ect.
and just so I'm not being completly off topic, Totorosama, you are right with that comment. Well said :).

Valentine's Day is pointless because you have don't anybody to celebrate with but your mom or dad or both, WOW. Come on, seriously. Even if you have a girlfriend or boyfriend both people are going to be thinking about what each ohter wants or likes. It's just too much of a hassle and stress. DAMN YOU VALENTINE'S DAY
