ARGH! Some of us may think that FF2j or even FF3j was the best! I don't understand why you're so set on using the US numbering system when almost nobody else uses it anymore. Even SE uses the japanese numbering system these days.

Yeah, using the old US numbering system is just a source of possible confusion. The games are called FF4 and FF6. I don't care that they were released in the US as FF2 and FF3, their real and original numbers are 4 and 6, they were the 4th and 6th games in the series. They've been re-released with these numbers in recent years too. I see absolutely no point whatsoever in calling them FF2 or FF3, even with the (US) tag at the end. It will just be confusing with different numbering on the same games, and honestly, adding the JAP and US tags at the end doesn't look good either.

Besides, to the rest of the world they are FF4 and FF6, nothing else, and even out of the americans, only very few call them FF2 and FF3 anymore.

As for the true FF2 and FF3 (for NES), FF2 is arguably the worst FF game ever, while FF3 is actually a lot of fun. You don't consider FF2 and FF3 part of the series? Or is it just the fact that you've never played them? Well, newsflash, a lot of people HAVE played them, and they HAVE been released here now officially. Leaving them out of a vote for the best game in the series is, no offense, stupid.

I'm not sure I can ever forgive Square for renaming the games the way they did, because the confusion about missing games in the series back then couldn't possibly have been any worse than what we have now instead. And the release of FF7 and on with the same title everywhere didn't present any problems, did it? *sigh*

Anyway.. I voted for FF7.

See, Zynk, there's another reason to stop using the old US numbering. It confuses people, even if you do add the (US) tag at the end. I can't force you to do anything, but it would make it so much easier if everyone called the games FF4 and FF6. There can be no misunderstanding of what game you are actually talking about then.

IMO, Tactics isn't part of the real Final Fantasy series. Sure it's got it's name, but it's not numbered and it's so different in gameplay compared to the other titles, so it's standing out a little on it's own. And I wouldn't count X-2 either, as it's just a direct sequel to a previous title, not part of the real series. But that's just my opinion.

And you know, the american version of FF4 is a slightly simplified version of the japanese original. They made the game easier and took out a bunch of items and monsters in the american version, nowadays referred to as "easy-type" (and the japanese original is "hard-type"), because they thought the game would be too hard for the american audience.. or something like that. But I'm sure you knew that :)

Anyway, I guess you can keep the poll as it is. Unless someone demands to be able to vote on FF2 and FF3 (the NES games, I never use the old US numbering), then just keep it going.

FF8 has always been my favourite. I thought the story was great, I liked the junction system and the battle system too even if it was a little easy, had good music, and I really liked Squall at the time so I could really follow the game.

X comes in a close second.

Hi all. New to the boards finding this very interesting. My vote has to goto FF 7 I just like how it was set up and the game play was awesome. On the whole numbering thing I agree. I admit I use to be one to call them FF2(US) and FF3(US) but that was before I new about the three before them. Now it is easier to just call them 4 and 6

Final Fantasy 8... The junction system allows you to control your character's attributes like no other... The charcters are pretty cool... They have sorceresses... And you don't have to buy armor, but instead, you use magic to upgrade your defenses, how can you argue... Plus the story was just crazy.

I've only played 7, 8 and 9 and out of them I'd have to say 7 is the best. Its the one that gets replayed the most often.

9 is good and I enjoyed the storyline as it was a bit different. The chocobo treasure hunting was fun.

8 bored me a bit and I had to force myself to finish it. The romantic twaddle ruined it in my opinion.

You talk to the king, and he will have a bridge built so you can cross over the river and go on to the next town.

You go southwest from the town where you get the ship. You can just follow the coast southward and then west until you get to a place where you can get off. You should see a new town when you get off there, it's the elf town :) You might want to fight a lot in the march lands to the east of that town (fighting ogres), to level up and get money to buy the very expensive silver swords (well worth it for your fighter/s).

FF7 has gotta be the best of all, because it has the best story and it has the best kind of animation, also they had the best summon in all the Final Fantasy, also then strongest.
FF7 has to be the best because they had the weapon startagies. With Ruby its better to kill your other partners so he doesnt use Quicksand, but he'll problably use it, but it wont effect.
Because it takes two partners away, not one. And just make your HP 7677 then use a potion and he'll use lucky seven, anyways atleast Lucky 7 is better than Omnislash. Then just use Knights of the Round Table and he just might be dead. And anyways, I watched a Japanese version of it where Barret had Mime and Counter on Every slot with his final weapon, and he used Ungarmax and then he used it 6 more times! And it also killed Emerald in 1 minute 18 seconds!!!!!!!!!!! Thats why I think FF7 is the best.

The best for me is FF7. I have played the PRE (not post :rolleyes: ) PS games and I must say, they are damn good too.
But 7 is tatooed on my heart. An epic. Chocobo Breeding, Gold Saucer, The Huge Storyline, Characters that you actually cared about, THE BEST BAD GUY, Fantastic Music (I think the best of any) and just overall sweetness.
Also, its the only one I have gone back to.

I think every game has its own soul. I like them equally. I didnt like Final Fantasy IV though... but the other games IV --> X-2, grabbed me and shook me in diffrent ways. Its aint fair to rank them. Cause each game has their own soul. I'm looking forwars to FFXII, I have high expectations from that game though, but I'm pretty sure that the game will live up to my expectations. :)

Honestly, I don't think anything can top FF VII. The game had it all. Great storyline, graphics and gameplay. Good music, monsters, archenemy/ies, (Jenova) summons, magic sequences.
Now I concurr that everyone is entitled to their opinion. But I get so much out of each playthrough of FF VII that each time it's like a new game to me. There's SO much to it! I can't bring myself to pick up a game of FFVI or FFVIII or FFIX, but I'd play FFVII or FFX anytime. Keep rocking em out square!

now, what you have to understand, is rpgs werent really based on story back then. (well, the first ff did have quite a story , back then.) the light warriors are epic heroes, thats why they dont talk.

and, the time-loop concept was really heavy for back then. (i got confused the first few times 0_o;; )

the problem with comparing a old game with today's games is that games have most certainly evolved since then. games are a serious form of entertainment, unlike back then, when only a few dedicated fans played the games back then. (although japan may be different, they like to go through trends and such...)

so yes, if you compare ffi's story to say, ffx's, then it wont be so great. but compare it to the other games back then, and youll see it has an awesome story.

Me too.(well, for me, 'cause Final Fantasy 6 (American FF3)'s votes are just so few :( i guess graphics do conquer for these votes(and FFVII has its amazing story too, so :o ))

I just can't decide. Though I would probably pick FFVI. It was very amazing, it introduced pretty much what would be all the story staples in later FFs. It also pushed the graphics of the SNES to the limit, at least for their games. (They usually do with the last game of the console.) It's story was pretty revolutionary, once again, introducing some staples of later FFs. And, well...Kefka is the best FF villian ever. Think you can come up with someone eviller and crazier than Kefka? (Is "eviller" even a word?) I think not. :p

And the reason FFVII gets so many votes is because it's well...just very popular. It was the first FF released worldwide. Naturally that would mean it was many peoples' first FF experience. FFVIII was amazingly popular too (from what I understand. )

But anyway, I guess I'll just pick FFVI. I love them all though...

I don't like X-2 because it's an actual sequel to an FF game, which shouldn't be. (Though I guess SE doesn't care anymore.. *points at FFVII spin-offs*) It was produced in a few months, with a poor storyline (well, compared to X's.) ive always liked, final fantasy 7 but just recently i played X2 and wanted to spew! i hated it, i feel that there was no storyline to it whatsoever! does it actually have any good points?

Final Fantasy VII is indeed one of the easier ones in the serie, 'cause the Materia system is without a doubt so adaptable, that it could be broken (but of course, not in comparison to the Junction system :p ). A lot of gamers find this disturbing, but for me, it's quite a benefit, that FFVII isn't too easy, or too hard. :)

Obviously the ff8 people don't come here as much...actually I'm begining to think that this used to bea Forum just for FF-7 before it generalised (Is that a real word?!)
I'm am truely SHOKED and unhappy to be honest...I hope Ican make friends with those who voted for ff8!

Maybe there's a reason for all those votes in FF7... I personally didn't like FF8 much...

I voted FF 7. I liked the story even if sometimes it was a little weird... I saw some movies on net from FF X and FF X-2 and I wanna play them... they made me curious.

I voted FF9. I liked the cartoony looks of the characters and the Epic Fairy Tale story. I really felt for the Characters too. Poor Vivi, Garnet and Freya always made my eyes water... Of course FF7 is second. Then FF10. I'll even mention FF Tatics Advance. It was a nice little game for a quick FF fix while on the road. :)

FFIX is my favorite FF, then it's FFIV and then FFTactics.
I just didn't see anything good about FF7, I just thought the storyline was extremely clichéd and Sephiroth was kinda boring
