Symbolism in Beatrix
I find that there are quite a few pieces of symbolism surrounding Beatrix (her name, her background, etc). One that I find particularily interesting is her "blindness."
Think of it this way... She's lost her eye in battle and is partially blind- yet her other eye still remains and she has hope of being able to see. The way I see it, her service to Alexandria has made her lose sight of herself. She has become so absorbed in her duty that she can no longer fathom the difference between right or wrong, and is incapable of following her own heart. Yet even so, she eventually overcomes her blindness and manages to re-assume her dignity while still holding the scars of the past. Any other interesting symbols? |
That's one way to look at it.
I, myself, am blind to seeing symbolic meanings so, no. Nice post though. :thumbsup |

She lost her eye or is partially blind? That has never been said in the game. Only because she has a patch over her right eye doesn't necessarily mean that she is blind ... it's the same as saying Blank is blind (he has both eyes covered) but surely he can see. The same goes with Marcus. Beatrix is 'blinded' by the corruption of Brahne, I agree. Not able to see right from wrong, I agree. She overcame her blindness when Zidane & co rescued Garnet in Alexandria's Castle. Beatrix finally realized that Brahne wasn't doing good things at all. (she felt bad after the destruction of Cleyra) I think she leaves that patch on her eye (from after the rescue on) so she wanted to be reminded from that incident so she wouldn't be blinded from further corruption and thus make sure she would follow her heart. ps: this post was not meant to be agressive towards the thread starter ;) |

Re: Loss of Me
That's just a liiiiittle off topic, this is the FFIX area, not FFVIII, and noone is discussing Ultimecia..

Re: Loss of Me
Indeed true.
As for the symbolism thing, i think that both Garnet and Zerlina have really good and different opinions on the whole eye patch thing with Beatrix, i myself think that: Yes blinded by corruption and Yes cant see btween right and rong, but another thing is that (this has already been basically said, thought i might mention it anyway) it also refers to the song: Loss of Me, because Beatrix is lost in her own pool of thoughts and conflicts. Eventually she finds herself but is reminded of her dark 'Lost period' whenever she looks in the mirror at the dark patch. i hope i got a good point... sometimes i lose myself too... |

Also, while this may be odd, stupid, and not really anything at all, but Alexandria was ruled by someone who was an expansionist and attempted to take over a lot of other kingdoms (Queen Brahne). Wasn't the real Alexandria founded by Alexander the Great, another expansionist and conquerer? And Baku is a real place. I think it's in Africa. |

Why? Did you see him walking into a wall once? I haven't. And I don't think you can perform a sword fight scene like he does with Zidane back at Alexandria when you can't see even one smurfing bit. It's even more clear in the FMV when the gang escapes from Evil Forest: he doesn't walk against a tree, he runs in the right direction, he pushes Zidane on purpose so that Zidane could use the Continent Map. Want more examples? :D And btw, what I'm going to type now is very old and for most people very annoying, but also very true: It's Final Fantasy ... not Final Reality |
