Re: Apple, Windows, or Linux?

I have a dual boot config of Vista with Ubuntu 8.04. I'm actually using Ubuntu at the moment.

Linux is a very reliable OS. A lot of people I know say they don't know anything about computer but are eager to learn. Their problem is that they have no idea where to start. And with windows, pretty much everything is done for you out of the box. I always recommend that they switch to Linux if they want to learn how to do stuff within a PC because you have to set almost every piece of hardware up. Linux users know what I mean.

When you start Linux, you usually have to enable all of the drivers or install other drivers to get things to work. You get to get down into the system (to a point) to get what you want. It's not so much a plug and play thing anymore. Because of that, troubleshooting becomes a lot easier; you already know where your files and drivers are, what version they are, and you're already trained to know what to do to update, delete, or re-install said driver. I generally get an answer like "ZOMG NOOOOWAY Linux would be way to hard to use." At that point, I tell people about Live disks and dual booting. That usually gets them to give a shot. Since then, pretty much all of my users have become efficient computer users and have loved Linux.

If anyone has any questions about Linux, I'm free to help. I'm no guru by any means, but I've dabbled in it quite a bit, and know where to look to find answers.

The only reason i still use Vista is due to the fact that I do a lot of computing on a day to day to basis. While Linux has tons of free apps to emulate Windows products, I can't get everything I want out of Linux. That's why I'm on a dual boot config rather than completely on Linux.
