I tend to set them up with the abilities you mentioned in your guide but I then get quina to cast night on them.

Stealing items from them dont wake em up but mug does. I then use abilities which will kill them in one hit. Eg lai strike, death, odin, mustard bomb or freeze.

When the animation for these attacks are happening I just go into the item inventory to stop time moving so yan dont get as much time to attack as he normally would. I tend to use zidane for healing or reviving.

Having eiko is useful aswell as phoenix can revive you all if yan defeats your party.
