I think it's editing. =D

It's not censoring, because the material'd be gone, but it'd be blurred out.

Us Americans tend to show a fondness to changing things we don't see fit for the nation.

And half naked sprites on a video game seems to be one of them.

Like a fully normal man i think the Japaneese version is mutch better
And i dont see why USA should edit it, its not like porn or any of that its just sexy

I think it has a lot more to do with nintendo sticking their oars in on that one. The game was made originally for the snes.

Nintendo, especially in the early to middle nineties had a thing about not wanting to offend anyone especially the american side of things.

I can think of other games which have had similar editing.

Yes, Nintendo of America had very strict censorship guidelines back then. Many things in the game were censored or edited, including all the sprites shown above, spells like Death becoming Doom, Holy becoming Pearl, Relm and Kefka's furious language, etc. Thankfully, Woolsey was skilled enough to use this to his advantage by making the script and miscellaneous names spruced up a bit.

Edit: You forgot Siren, which is the one sprite which probably warrants a cover-up. xD
