Original meanings of words

How has the word kid grown to be used to much today, that we're referring to our children as kids. You may or may not know, but the word kid means baby goat, so why are we calling our children baby goats, it doesn't make since!? I am offended when someone used to call me a kid because I am in no relation to a goat. The word bitch means female dog , but it is mainly known to be an insult, sometimes women use it casually to greet each other, but the point remains that they treat Bitch as a curse word and kid not when thet both are referring people as animals. In my opinion they should unban bitch and ban kid. Maybe it's the way the words sound to make them banned rather than the meaning, but I don't judge a word by how it sounds, but by the meaning., and my case stands if bitch is considered profanity, then kid should be too! It's just frivolous!

Re: Kid and Bitch

I never knew that, well, about the true meaning of 'kid'. And, well, how to explain these things. Society to blame? Or is it just another step in the evolution of common speaking? Who knows.

I'm really surprised now by this definition of kid. Now, my knowledge on English vocabulary isn't that wide, since it's not my mother language, but I always considered a kid like being the stage between child - teenager. Just a term like no other.

Re: Kid and Bitch

The word "kid" has been used by society for a while. And you said it yourself. Kid means baby goat. We aren't exactly CALLING our children baby goats, in general. It's a bit of an analogy really. Kid is to baby goat as kid is to little human. :D

When our parents and random people off the street call us kids, they aren't referring to goats. They're saying we're small people. As if likes little goats. They don't MEAN to. Hell, half of the nation doesn't know kid means baby goat. They could care less. It's one of many labels of a child.

And the word "bitch". Is what you make of it. Your point of view makes it a bad word. Bitch can be used in a regular conversation with anyone of age, and one of the many will make a crack about a curse word. Words have multi meanings. Like kid=baby goat/a child, and bitch=a female dog/a curse word.

Using bitch in a harsh way is profanity. Using it intelligently gives it a new meaning. As does kid.

So, just use them in their terms of definition. :D

Re: Kid and Bitch

If people still actually used every word like it originally meant, then everyday conversations would take on totally different meanings.

Editted thread title, if ya don't mind.

There's more than one meaning; After all, words come from society: not vice versa. Especially in the American language which seems to be half slang anyway.

Hey! Lyde Lyde is back! (Welcome back) lol And comes once again complaining about the society habits! lol :p (joke)
Spiff claimed it, with the dictionary definitions. Words do not appear by themselves; society creates the words. I didn't know that meanings either, however I don't think that's much trouble.

Well, perhaps it's not a thing to worry a lot about. Nevertheless, never stop saying what you believe in or defending what you think you should. It's good to know you worry about these things. I'm not saying you to not changing your mind, but not to feel annoyed or embarassed if people do not think the same as you. :) (Again, I'm not saying you might have felt the comments annoying or embarassing, in case anyone thinks it )

So, I keep on thinking that's not such a problem like that. ;) Just language evolution :)
