Yes, it's an older game, and it much less forgiving than the later games in the series.

Leveling up will help, as well as knowing what classes to use and when (which should be indicated by what NPCs tell you and equipment and spells you find). Also, you will have to use your brain during some fights, as well as in figuring out what to do next; as an older game, it doesn't just outright give you information on where to go. You have to listen to what NPCs and other characters say about the world, etc.
